A routing layer gradually redirects traffic from legacy to modern components. Legacy components are decommissioned only after the modern replacement is proven in production.

This pattern minimizes risk because the legacy system remains operational throughout the migration. If a new component encounters issues, traffic can be instantly routed back.

Measuring Success

Define clear metrics for transformation progress. Deployment frequency measures how quickly the team can deliver changes. Lead time for changes tracks the time from code commit to production deployment. Change failure rate indicates the quality of releases. Mean time to recovery measures how quickly the team can resolve production incidents.

Organizational Alignment

Technology transformation requires organizational transformation. Cross-functional teams aligned to business domains deliver better outcomes than siloed functional teams. Investment in training and upskilling ensures the team can maintain and extend modern systems. Executive sponsorship provides the air cover needed to sustain long-term transformation efforts.
